Middle School General Music

Welcome to Middle School General Music! In this class we will learn the fundamentals of music and how to apply them! Music is a challenging language to learn so if any students need extra help, I am available to tutor them!
I am available, formally, for music tutoring every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday after school. I have a sign-up sheet displayed in the classroom and students may sign up for one 30 minute session a week. The sessions are from 3-3:30 p.m., 3:30-4 p.m., and 4-4:30 p.m.. If these times do not work, I can be available on a Tuesday, Thursday, or any day before school. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me!

Required Materials

In order for our class to run smoothly and effectively, I do ask that students bring a few required materials to class with them everyday.

·         Pencil

·         Journal (Either a notebook or a binder with paper. Nothing specific, just something that they can write a journal entry in to every day.)

·         All music, study guides, or worksheets that are passed out in class.

If it is not possible for these materials to be attained, please let me know. I will try to assist in any way I am able.

Class Expectations

I have a few, simple, expectations for my classes that ensure that the classroom is an orderly and safe learning environment;  they are as follows:

·         Enter quietly and politely

·         No food, drinks, or gum (plain water is acceptable and encouraged in class)

·         Make the right sound at the right time (make music when you’re supposed to make music, do not talk or make noise when you are supposed to listen, participate in class discussions, etc.)

·         Respect yourself, others, and all property.

·         Always bring required materials: notebook, pencil, materials handed out in class, and a good attitude!

·         Exit quietly and politely

If the above expectations are not met consistently, the class learning experience will suffer. To limit disruptions I have put the following three-strike system in place:

1st strike: Verbal warning

2nd strike: Parent/guardian contact
3rd strike: ISS referral and parent/guardian contact

Any serious infractions and disregard for school policy will be sent directly to administration.

Grading Policy

The student’s  grades will be broken down in to the following areas:

40% Participation: This means that as long as the student comes to class prepared, meets the above mentioned expectations, and displays effort; he or she will receive full credit for participation.

20% Listening Journals: At the beginning of each class, I will play an appropriate musical selection and ask students to use their critical thinking skills to answer a few questions about the music. The students are to bring their listening journals to every class. I will collect the journals every two weeks to be graded, so the journal should not be shared with another class.

40% Tests and Assignments: Tests and assignments are crucial to make sure that the students are learning and understanding the material.
