Middle School Band

Music is a challenging yet rewarding language to learn! I am very dedicated to all of my students being successful in this class and in life. I am always available for students to come to me for extra help. It is very difficult to learn an instrument properly without individual instruction. 
I am available, formally, for music lessons/tutoring every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday after school. I have a sign-up sheet displayed in the classroom and students may sign up for one 30 minute session a week. The sessions are from 3-3:30 p.m., 3:30-4 p.m., and 4-4:30 p.m.. If these times do not work, I can be available on a Tuesday, Thursday, or any day before school. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me!

Required Materials

In order for our class to run smoothly and effectively, I do ask that students bring a few required materials to class with them everyday.

·         Instrument: This includes instrument accessories that are necessary for playing their instrument. Percussionists should own their own snare drum sticks. All other percussion instruments will be provided for in-class use.

·         Pencil

·         Journal: Either a notebook or a binder with paper. Nothing specific, just something that they can write a journal entry in to every day; should not be shared with another class.

·         Music: This includes all music that is handed out in class and their Essential Elements book.


If it is not possible for these materials to be attained, please let me know. I will try to assist in any way I am able.  


Grading Policy

The student’s  grades will be broken down in to the following areas:

40% Participation: This means that as long as the student comes to class prepared, meets the above mentioned expectations, and displays effort; he or she will receive full credit for participation.

20% Listening Journals: At the beginning of each class, I will play an appropriate musical selection and ask students to use their critical thinking skills to answer a few questions about the music. The students are to bring their listening journals to every class. I will check the journals every two weeks.

20% Ability to demonstrate presented material: This means that the student has paid attention in class, practices their instrument, and puts forth their best effort to play all music covered in class. This will be graded based on individual performances during periodic playing tests. If any student is having any problems, I am more than happy to tutor them on their instrument. I do not expect anything to be perfect, but I do expect to see effort. 

20% Assignments

There will be two major assignments in this class:

1. An end of semester in-class conducting project. Details will be sent home at a later date. 
2. Performing at our end of semester concerts. It is extremely important that all band students are able to participate in this concert. If there are any scheduling conflicts, I need to know as soon as possible so I can assign an alternate assignment. The concert is akin to a  final exam, meant to display what we have learned all year. I will soon send home information regarding our concerts.
